Scents can often reflect our mood and personality. A certain fragrance on a good friend may smell completely different to you because each fragrance reacts differently according to your own chemical makeup.
When testing a perfume in a store, remember to wait about 10 minutes before buying it to allow the fragrance to react to your body chemistry. Smell it after the first application and smell it again after waiting. This will allow you to taste both the top and middle notes of the fragrance and give you a good sense of how the fragrance will last throughout the day.
Remember to limit the number of scents you try in the store at one time - stick to only 3 or 4 at a time. Otherwise, your olfactory senses may be overwhelmed and you may not be able to tell one perfume from another!
If you are concerned about an allergic reaction, wait about an hour after sampling the perfume. If there's no reaction by then, it's probably safe to go ahead and splurge on a new perfume!
Always apply fragrances directly to your skin or hair, as some fragrances (especially perfumes and eau de parfums with a higher concentration of oils) can cause discoloration on certain fabrics. Never spray perfumes directly on silk - you will damage it!
If you like to spray a bit on your clothes, make sure you test it on a hidden spot like the inner lining first before spraying it all over! This is especially true for delicate fabrics and "dry-clean only" clothing.
I recommend changing the scent depending on the season. In other words, go for lighter scents during warmer weather and save stronger scents for drier, cooler weather. The heat intensifies the scent, so there's no need to suffocate by a heavy scent in the summer. And if you're outdoors, be aware that bees, wasps, hornets, and other flying bugs are attracted to floral scents (another good reason to stick to light, clean scents!)
Speaking of hot, if you want your favorite perfume to still be as fresh as the day you bought it, store the bottle in a cool, dark place. Keep the bottle in the original box if possible. You might want to keep it in the fridge so you can have a refreshing cooling spray of your perfume before heading out for the next day!
